Carbon nanowalls functionalization for efficient O2 reduction catalyzed by laccase using design of experiment

An enzymatic biofuel cell cathode was elaborated by nano-structuration and functionalization of graphite using two consecutive plasma treatments before immobilization laccase as a biocatalyst to perform oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) direct electron transfer ((DET). Nano-structuration surfaces synthesis vertical graphen-like carbon nanowalls (CNWs) performed microwave excited enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Atmospheric pressure jet (APPJ) system then used functionalize chemically the CNWs surface via rapid dry route. A partial fractional design evidenced significant parameters APPJ treatment in terms ORR current density: time inter-distance between material. With optimized parameters, four-fold enhancement density (-440 ± 70 μA/cm2) could be obtained on CNWs, compared electrodes. The best about −1 mA/cm2 with oxidized covalently immobilized electrode without any agitation solution, confirming main importance enzyme orientation for efficient DET transfer, relevance nanostructuration advantage covalent linking protein surface.
